What is emotional intelligence?

Up until the nineties, psychologists thought the deductive intelligence, measured by IQ tests, to be the most important in life. Nearly all of the XXth century, since Alfred Binet invented modern IQ tests in 1905, was dominated by a specific cult of IQ. Intelligence tests were used in schools to examine student skills, in large corporations during the recruitment process, and even in the army for a time. It was a harmful fad, since in reality, the intelligence quotient is not an objective measure of human abilities.

In the year 1996 a known psychologist, Daniel Goleman, published his most famous book, wherein he proposed a new concept of measuring human abilities. He introduced the term “emotional intelligence” (EQ) into the world of science, discerning it from deductive intelligence (IQ). He said that success in life is not dependent on the ability to solve mathematical tasks and sort colored geometrical shapes in a proper order (which are typical tasks in standard IQ tests), but rather the ability to cope with your own emotions, build regular relationships with other people, empathy and assertiveness. These are extremely valuable nowadays, so it’s often the case that during the recruitment process, HR specialists use psychological tests of various sophistication levels. The EQ test available here can measure the emotional intelligence quotient of any person.
